Today’s postlude was written by Johann Gottfried Walther, who lived from 1684 to 1748. He was a cousin of J.S. Bach’s. Walther compiled the Musicalisches Lexicon, which was the first dictionary of music and musicians. The title of today’s postlude contains the sentence “Cantus firmus im Sopran und Baß, which simply means that the cantus firmus of the piece is in the soprano line and the bass line, meaning that it is played in the right hand and in the pedals. A cantus firmus is an existing melody on which the composer bases his or her composition. In this case, Nun lob, mein Seel, den Herren is the hymn tune that Walther used. If you listen carefully, you will hear the tune traded between the top voice and lowest voice as the piece progresses.
