EXECUTIVE BOARD - The "/E-Board" is composed of the
officers of the church (Chair, Vice-Chair, Church Clerk and Treasurer), four
members-at-large, and the chairs of the Boards of Christian Education, Deacons,
Membership, Property Managers, Resources, World Fellowship, and Music & Fine Arts.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, setting the church budget,
overseeing church staff, calling congregational meetings, approving fundraising
projects, and directing the general policy of the church in accordance with
its stated mission. The Executive Board meets monthly, and meetings are open
to all, except for occasional executive sessions.
BOARD OF CHRISTIAN EDUCATION - responsible
for the administration and operation of the Church School and for the planning
and overseeing of Christian Education programs for all ages, from the nursery
through adult education.
BOARD OF DEACONS - arranges
for and regulates services
for public worship and finds substitute
ministers when needed. The Deacons
support church members in times of need,
raise and administer the Deacons Fund,
assist the Ministers in the observance of the
rites and sacraments of the church, and provide
guidance to the Ministers regarding the needs of
the congregation and the quality
of worship.
BOARD OF FINANCE - directs the church expenditures and investment policies.
The Board of Finance prepares an annual budget for presentation to the Executive
Board and approval by the Church.
BOARD OF MEMBERSHIP - identifies families and
individuals interested in joining Christ Church and helps to incorporate new
members into the church community.
BOARD OF PROPERTY MANAGERS - responsible for the care
and maintenance of the physical property of the Church, including the church
buildings and grounds, and other property which is owned or leased by the Church.
The Board is responsible for building use, and may charge fees upon making church
facilities available to groups in the community.
BOARD OF RESOURCES - conducts the annual stewardship
campaign, oversees capital and/or endowment development, as well as any other
money-raising efforts on behalf of the Church. The Board assists in the preparation
of the budget.
BOARD OF WORLD FELLOWSHIP (BWF) - is responsible for the Church'/s programs
of Christian benevolence and outreach to local community and worldwide projects.
Supports both denominational affiliates and their individual mission efforts.
Supports over 45 independent organizations and projects through financial contributions.
Every Easter holds an SOS drive to extend outreach. Organizes participation
in several local hands-on projects such as the NJ FoodBank, Bridges
Outreach, and the Interfaith Hospitality Network.
The BWF generally meets monthly.
BOARD OF MUSIC & FINE ARTS -
assists the professional and volunteer music staff and provides
general supervision of staff as required by the Ministers or the
Executive Board. Encourages and supports appreciation of music and
fine arts by producing the Lile Hall recital and concert series and
arranging periodic exhibits of artwork by members of the Christ
Church community.
AUDIT COMMITTEE - is responsible for auditing the accounts of the Treasurer
and Financial Secretaries.
COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE - promotes and enhances internal and external
communication among the congregation, the boards and committees, and the congregation
and the community. Maintains the Church website and email lists for all the
boards and committees. Distributes press releases to local newspapers for special
services and events. Supports the office staff in preparation of worship bulletins,
newsletters, and other publications.
The Communications Committee generally meets monthly.
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (IT) COMMITTEE -
Manages the Church'/s computers, software, databases, networks,
phone system, office equipment, and A / V equipment --
all of the technology that supports the Church'/s communications
and internal processes.
NOMINATING COMMITTEE -
nominates Christ Church people for positions on the boards and committees.
PASTOR-PARISH COMMITTEE - supports and maintains an open and healthy
relationship between the ministers and the congregation, serving as an advisory
group to the minister and as support for the minister'/s leadership.
There is a Pastor-Parish Committee for each minister.
PERSONNEL COMMITTEE - reviews job responsibilities and performance of
all paid, non-ordained staff members in conjunction with the senior minister.
Makes recommendations regarding salary and benefits to the Executive Board
for both ordained and non-ordained staff.
USHERS COMMITTEE - provides ushering at church services.
CHURCH LIFE COMMITTEE - coordinates the social life of Christ Church.
Major events include the Progressive Dinner in the fall, the Advent Workshop
in early December, the Annual Meeting in May, and the year-end Picnic in June.
In some years, Church Life has also organized Suppers for Seven, which are more
intimate gatherings in members' homes during February/March.
GREETERS - people who greet worship attendees and make them feel that they truly
belong. Time commitment is once or twice a year.
CHURCH HISTORIANS - responsible for collecting and archiving documents,
pictures and media coverage of significant church events.
ILLUMINATORS STEERING COMMITTEE -
recruits and organizes members to provide special presentations of poetry,
drama and song during Sunday worship services and at occasionally at other times.
HOMELESS HOSPITALITY COMMITTEE - coordinates with HomeFirst
of Union County to help house temporarily homeless families
at Christ Church. Four times a year, for a week at a time, Christ Church hosts
families in this support network. Committee members recruit church volunteers
to assist. Committee members are '/on call' for the week they are coordinating,
and otherwise put in about an hour a month during the year.
ADULT EDUCATION COMMITTEE - organizes a series of educational events
for the congregation during the year, often following worship service.
ALTERNATIVE GIFT MARKET COMMITTEE - organizes an annual pre-Christmas
fund-raising event which gives people the opportunity to make donations in another'/s
name to further the work of local, national, and international charities. For
example, one can donate funds for a water well, chickens for a family, educational
materials, or medical supplies. More than just charitable, these are thoughtful
gifts for everyone on one'/s holiday list -- even doctors, teachers, and co-workers!
The gift recipient receives a memento and a gift card explaining the donation.
A gift card might read, "Dear Uncle Jay, a set of tools has been given
in your name to Habitat for Humanity."
The Committee meets has a number of meeting leading up to the event
in November, then recesses for the rest of the year. The event only
takes place in certain years, and has been expanded to include Fountain Baptist
Church and Temple Sinai in Summit, and so has been renamed the
"/Alternative Gift Market / Mitzvah Mall".
CHANCEL CHOIR - Sings at most worship services during the year. Also,
presents major works at special performances including instrumentalists
and guest soloists. On some occasions, joins with other church choirs in Summit
for special combined performances. Rehearses Thursday evenings. There are openings
in all voice parts. No auditions. Sight-reading not required.
Solo opportunities. Wide range of music. Part-time participation
can be negotiated. All are welcome!
JUBILATION BELL RINGERS - the senior bell choir at Christ Church,
which plays handbells at worship services several times a year,
and gets to wear cool red robes! Rehearses on Monday evenings.
It'/s a lot of fun. Prior bell ringing experience not necessary,
but some ability to read a musical score is a very big help.
OFFICE MAILING ASSISTANTS -
volunteers who help with stuffing and addressing of envelopes for church mailings, as necessary.
KITCHEN COMMITTEE -
does final clean-up and straightening of the Church'/s kitchen, as necessary,
after it has been used by various groups.
ABC REPRESENTATIVE -
maintains Christ Church'/s connection with the American Baptist Churches of America, one of our two
affiliate denominations. Attends occasional ABC gatherings at the state, regional, and
national level.

UCC REPRESENTATIVE -
maintains Christ Church'/s connection with the United Church of Christ, one of our two
affiliate denominations. Attends occasional UCC gatherings at the state, regional, and
national level.
LIBRARY COMMITTEE -
organizes and maintains the Church'/s Library (in the Margaret Acker room off Barnwell Hall).
Currently inactive.
INVESTMENT COMMITTEE -
manages the Church'/s investment portfolio.
FINANCIAL SECRETARIES -
manage the "/accounts receivable department" of the church. Receives, counts, and deposits weekly
donations, and manages pledge accounts.
PLANTS COMMITTEE -
waters and cares for the plants in and around the church.
