Saturday, October 13, 2007

8:30AM---12:00 Noon

Westy Storage Center, 15 River Road Chatham

Notice the different location! We will not be taking donations at the Christ Church Parking lot this time, but at the Westy Storage Center. Thanks Westy!

Directions to Westy Storage Center: Drive west through Summit on Morris Ave. all the way to the end. Left on River Road, Summit. Follow River Road as it bends around to the right. At first light, left onto River Road, Chatham. Westy Storage Center is on your left.

Look for the Nicaragua signs. We'll be there to greet you and accept your donations! Here's a Google map of Westy's location.

What is the Nicaragua Container shipment? Twice a year, the local nonprofit PeaceWorks sends a shipping container full of donated goods to grassroots organizations in Nicaragua. Christ Church is a big participant. The container shipment is a great way to turn your outgrown summer clothing and unused household items into precious gifts that are eagerly awaited and gratefully received in Nicaragua.

Inhijambia: Christ Church sends the bulk of its donations to Inhijambia (name means Heroic Woman), our biggest and most active partner organization. Inhijambia operates an impressive rehab program for homeless teenage girls, most of whom are single mothers. It gives the girls education, job training, cultural enrichment, and a sense of community.
Now Inhijambia has funding to open a Welcome Center for homeless teenage boys. There will be a whole house to furnish, so their wish list for the Welcome Center includes furniture and major appliances. Let's all look around and see what we have to donate! For a list of specific items Inhijambia requests for the Welcome Center, visit the Welcome Center wish list page. For other kinds donations Inhimabia could use, see the Inhijambia wish list page.

What else can you donate? In general:

  • Gently used summer or light-weight clothing and shoes;
  • Baby clothes, toys, bedding, and equipment;
  • Household and garden appliances and tools;
  • Bicycles--Yes, we are taking bikes this time;
  • Computers (Pentium III and higher, supporting Microsoft Windows) and printers, office supplies, and school supplies;
  • Sports equipment;
  • Medical supplies.

How do you donate? Please put your donations, except for the biggest items, in cardboard boxes, and write a short description of contents (e.g., clothes, sports equipment) on each box. Then bring them to the Westy Storage Center Saturday morning, October 13.
